Harris Feeding Company
One of the secrets to great beef is meticulous attention to feeding practices. Harris Ranch is one of just a few producers in the country that produces beef exclusively from cattle fed in their own feedlot—Harris Feeding Company.
At Harris Feeding Company, attention to detail and high quality standards have been longtime keys to success. The modern feedlot covers nearly 800 acres and has the capacity to produce 250,000 head of fed cattle per year. Harris Ranch Beef is marketed throughout the West, where the Harris Ranch brand has come to stand for quality and value.
The feedlot is located on the West side of California's vast San Joaquin Valley. There, cattle are grain fed, a practice known to produce flavorful and tender high quality beef. Cattle typically spend 9 to 14 months grazing on range or pastureland. They are then transported to Harris Feeding Company, where they will spend 3 to 4 months and reach a finished weight of approximately 1,250 pounds.
In the feedlot, the cattle are cared for by cowboys who ride the pens every day to ensure the health and well-being of every animal in their care. Shade has been installed and all cattle are fed in large, well-maintained, outdoor pens that are equipped with an automated sprinkler system to reduce dust and cool cattle during the summer months. World-renowned animal behaviorist, Dr. Temple Grandin has assisted with the design of cattle handling facilities and conducted training programs to ensure proper animal handling techniques.
We feed a balanced ration of quality feed grains, hay, vitamins and minerals formulated under the guidance of a consulting animal nutritionist. Corn, produced in the Midwest and shipped to our central California feedlot by the trainload, serves as the basis for our feed ration. As part of this specialized feeding regimen, Harris Ranch tests to ensure all ingredients used in our feed are free of pesticides. Furthermore, Harris Ranch has never fed any rendered animal proteins.
The beef division of Harris Ranch annually produces and markets in excess of 150 million pounds of beef making us the largest, fully-integrated beef operation in California. From cattle ranch to feedlot through processing and on into the retail meat case or fine-dining restaurant, every effort is taken to help ensure our customers are getting the highest quality, most wholesome beef available.
